The leading season-long Tour for Senior golfers over the age of 50 in the USA was born out of the Senior PGA Championship that was first held at Augusta National in 1937. It was, for many years, the only tournament of significance available to former regular PGA professionals who had reached the age of 50. The Senior PGA Tour was formed in 1980, and the first season’s winner was Don January with prizemoney of $44,100 from just four events. In 2025 there were 28 events with prizemoney in excess of $50 million, with the top earner Stewart Cink taking home $3,247,147.
The name of the Tour changed to the Champions Tour in 2003 and since 2015 has been known as the PGA Tour Champions.

The leading individual competition for professional Seniors in the USA is the Senior PGA Championship. The inaugural PGA Seniors’ Championship (as it was then called) was played over the Augusta National course between 30 November and 2 December 1937 and was the idea of the legendary amateur golfer Bobby jones and Alfred Bourne, the Augusta club vice-president. The 54-hole tournament was won by Scotland’s Jock Hutchison who beat Rhode Island's George Gordon by eight strokes. The Championship winner receives the magnificent Alfred S. Bourne trophy which was dionated by, and named after, one of the event’s co-founders.
