The Chevron Championship became a women's Major in 1983 and is the first one of the five Major splayed each season, normally in March or April.
The Chevron was first held in 1972 as the Colgate-Dinah Shore Winner's Circle following its launch by singer and actress Dinah Shore, and the chairman of the Colgate-Palmolive company, David Foster. The tournament had a variety of names until 2022 when it became known by its current title following a sponsorship deal with Chevron.
The event was played at the Mission Hills Country Club, Rancho Mirage, California every year from its launch until 2022 and since 2023 has been held at The Club at Carlton Woods, on the outskirts of Houston, Texas.
The first winner in 1972 was Jane Blalock (USA), and It was the first tournament on the LPGA tour with prizemoney in excess of $100,000. Blalock’s share was just over $20,000
