Organised by the European Golf Union, the European Amateur Team Championship was inaugurated in 1959 and won by Sweden. National teams of six players take part and while the format has changed over the years, the number of players has remained at six. Currently, a maximum of 16 teams take part in a mixed stroke play and match-play competition

The first two days consist of two rounds of stroke play and the top eight teams with the best aggregate scores then take part in the match-play knockout format consisting of two foursomes and five singles.
