Originally called the European Tour Order of Merit to decide the golfer winning the most money in a European PGA season. The winner was presented with the the Harry Vardon Trophy. Since 2013, a points system has been in operation, and this decides who wins what is now called the annual  “Race to Dubai”.

Colin Montgomerie topped the list a record seven years in succession between 1993-99.

The most money won in a singles season is €9,170,631.59 by Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy in 2024.
