Olympic Games

Golf was first held at the 1900 Paris Olympics and again at St. Louis in 1904. It was scheduled for London 1908 but was cancelled on Saturday 30 May, just two days before the competition was due to start because the BOA had received just one official entry, that of the reigning champion George Lyon of Canada. Golf’s  scheduled re-appearance at the 1920 Antwerp Games was also cancelled. It was not until 2009 that the IOC made the decision to re-instate golf into the official programme from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

The 2020 Olympics were held in 2021 because if the COVID pandemic

Royal Golf Courses

The world´s first golf club or society to be granted Royal patronage was the Perth Golfing Society by King William IV in 1833. The Perth Society had its patronage bestowed upon them a year before the more illustrious Royal and Ancient at St Andrews.

While the British Monarchy is responsible for bestowing the title on more than 75 golf clubs and societies, not all are in Britain or traditional Commonwealth countries, but have extended to other countries including the Czech Republic and Germany. The Homburger Golf Club at Bad Hamburg, Germany was the last club to receive the honour from HRH Queen Elizabeth II, in 2013.

Monarchs from other countries have created “Royal” golf clubs and societies within their own country, with Spain and Belgium being the most prevalent.
